“I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing.” -Galatians 2:21

The old covenant was the Law given unto Moses, and as he descended from the mountain carrying the two tablets, he carried the burden of man. This burden, though good, was shared with man to prepare the way for Christ. The stone tablets were not the means of salvation, but rather showed our need of it.

If there was any way to be righteous of our own accord, then there would have been no purpose for Christ and He need not have come to begin with. Christ, has provided the righteousness that man cannot earn through action, for all man is disobedient in the eyes of the law. We have all violated the law and thereby an atonement independent of the actions of man must be provided. Christ was the provision that brought the blessed gift of justification unto all man. Nothing we do can make us righteous, but as Christ was righteous, so also can we be through Him, the Savior of the world.
